RMHC/API Achiever Scholarship Program

CCEAF Co-Sponsorship 2008

Background

The RMHC/API Achiever Scholarship Program is sponsored by Ronald McDonald House Charities, local McDonalds operators, McDonald’s Suppliers, business sponsors and Asian Pacific Islander community organizations. Each year, the program provides matching funds on a 1:1 basis making a total of $100,000 scholarships possible. RMHC/API Achiever considers, recognizes and awards students who show academic achievement, accomplishments and awards, leadership, commitment to community service, and financial need or other hardships.

The California Chinese Engineers Association Foundation (CCEAF) is proud to have been one of the co-sponsors since 2004. As co-sponsor, CCEAF is entitled to select the award recipients it co-sponsors. A Committee consisted of CCEAF member volunteers is formed each year to develop the program guidelines and candidate selection criteria. A total of twenty students, children of our members, have been awarded in the past four years. This is the fifth year CCEAF participates in this program, and hopefully, with the support from members, will continue to do so and sponsor more students in future.

Terms

The RMHC/API Achiever Scholarship Program will award $1,000 scholarship to each qualified student. Recognition for the awards will be held at the RMHC/API Achiever Awards Event in June, 2008. Funds will be paid by check directly to the school toward the recipient’s tuition, books, fees, room/board, and other appropriate educational expenses.

Eligibility

• Active CCEA members and their direct family members. Applicants whose parent has more than 2-year CCEA membership or GWCS students with more than 2-year enrollment will be considered first.
• High school seniors (must be college enrolled in the fall 2008, verification required)

Selection Criteria

• Academic performance

Points are awarded to a GPA of 3.5 or higher for high school seniors.

• Community service

Points are given to contributions to Chinese-American community in particular.

• Extracurricular activities

Include school activities, work and volunteer experience.

• Leadership demonstration
• Awards and Honors received
• Financial hardship
• Physically challenged
• Personal statement/essay writing

Extra points are given to a Chinese version (hand writing acceptable) in addition to English version.

Application Requirements

• Two completed and signed application forms:

(1) Application Form, RMHC/API Achiever-CCEAF 2008 Scholarship Program

(2) 2008 Scholarship Application Form (to be provided in late 2007)

• The latest official transcript and a copy with GPA rank from school.
• A personal statement or an essay that provides information about the applicant’s ethnic background, how you see and what do you know about your background, community involvement and desire to contribute to promote Chinese culture and heritage. Information about unique personal or financial circumstances may be added. You are encouraged to elaborate the areas defined in the above Selection Criteria. Evaluation of the information provided in the writing will be used to award the selection points.
• At least one (maximum two) letter(s) of recommendation from a community leader, teacher or school official is required. The letter should detail the applicant’s background, achievements, leadership abilities and community involvement.
• If you are in need of financial aids and/or physically challenged, please state so in the first application form and provide documents, if available and you deem it necessary, as evidence.

Note: Your application will be not considered if any of the first four items is missing (except Item 1, 2^nd form).

Certification and Release

All applicants must sign both applications certifying that all information provided is true and complete to the best of their knowledge and ability. With their signature and submission of the application, applicants also grant RMHC and McDonald’s the right to use their information and their likeness for the purpose of promoting and publicizing the RMHC/API Scholarship Program.
